Is supplementary health insurance mandatory?
No, it is optional. Social security covers part of the costs (often 70% for outpatient care, 80% for hospitalization), but out-of-pocket expenses can be significant (optical, dental, excess fees). A health plan greatly reduces this remainder.
How do reimbursements work?
With third-party payment (pharmacy, optician, dentist in the partner network): no upfront payment. Otherwise, social security + supplementary reimbursement directly to your bank account within 48 hours on average after electronic claim receipt.
Is teleconsultation really free?
Yes, unlimited and with no out-of-pocket cost in all plans (general practitioners and specialists). 24/7 video consultation, prescription sent directly to pharmacy. Included even without an appointment with your regular doctor.
Can I switch health plans at any time?
Yes, thanks to mid-contract cancellation rights (100% Health law / 2020 decree): cancellation possible at any time after 12 months, free of charge and without justification. Your new insurer usually handles the paperwork. No new waiting period for previously covered benefits.
Are alternative therapies covered?
Yes, as an option or in Comfort/Premium plans: osteopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, etc., up to €150–300/year depending on level. Capped per session and per year. Reimbursement on presentation of invoice.
Are there waiting periods?
No waiting period for routine care, hospitalization and pharmacy. 3 to 6 months for optical, dental (implants, orthodontics) and private room in some plans. Possibility to waive waiting periods with proof of previous coverage.
Can the whole family be covered under one contract?
Yes, individual or family contract: spouse, children up to 21 (or 25 if studying), longer in case of disability. Flat rate or adjusted according to family composition. Possibility to add dependents later.
